PIQF Welcomes Stellar International Instructors!

PIQF prides itself on bringing talented and inspiring instructors to present workshops in Santa Clara. Creativity and expertise are always abundantly available from these wonderful teachers. This year’s Pacific International Quilt Festival at the Santa Clara Convention Center, October 12-15, has a spectacular faculty who will be offering a wide variety of workshops for beginner to advanced quilters and textile artists. Included for 2017 are well-known instructors and internationally admired quilters Libs Elliott and Angela Madden.

If you visit PIQF instructor Libs Elliott’s website, you will see the words TECHNOLOGY and TRADITION. Libs is a textile designer who combines technology with quilting. Using a program language called Processing allows her to create random compositions from simple geometric and traditional quilt block shapes. The Processing project began as collaboration with designer and technologist, Joshua Davis.

LIBS1_aLibs states, “My goal is to underline the importance of craft as art in our contemporary age by producing bespoke modern heirlooms – just like quilts from a century ago, these are pieces that can be passed down through generations.”

As a quilter, Libs explores how modern technology can transform a traditional and tactile craft into modern functional art. A deep appreciation for craftsmanship, design history and future-focused applications are all reflected in her work. Libs studied Material Art & Design at OCAD University. Her commissions include work for individuals and corporate clients such as Playground Inc. In addition, Libs teaches internationally. She is a designer for Andover Fabrics and lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Libs will teach three, full-day (9 am – 4 pm) workshops at PIQF:

In addition, on Friday afternoon Libs will present her lecture, Quilting with Code: The Quilts of Libs Elliott. In her presentation, she will discuss her ongoing exploration of how technology can transform a traditional craft into modern, functional art. She will give attendees a peek into how she works, what inspires her designs and where she finds balance.

HeadshotEasy, fast, innovative machine techniques form the basis of 25 years of international teaching, judging, producing books, CDs, tools, patterns, and award winning quilts for Angela who lives about 25 miles north of London in Harpenden,Herts. Angela’s techniques are fun and successful for everyone with or without experience or artistic ability. There’s a designer original in everyone given the right technique!

The methods she has developed and shares in her workshops are guided by the following principles:

  • My techniques should be accessible to everyone, no special skills are required.
  • Projects can be completed on almost any sewing machine.
  • The techniques are the fastest and most efficient I can find which guarantee success.
  • Final results should stand scrutiny, reaching the highest possible standards.
  • I believe that anyone can learn to design and sew original quilts if they have a positive outlook and are taught simple methods.
  • There are no ‘brownie points’ in Heaven for doing things the hard way!

Angela’s quilting philosophy is “’If sewing isn’t successful and fun … why do it?”

While at PIQF, she will teach three, full-day (9 am – 4 pm) workshops:

Angela’s Thursday afternoon lecture is sure to strike a chord with many: Confessions of a 30 Year Quilting Addict. “My name is Angela Madden and I am definitely an addict. From unexpectedly being instantly smitten all those years ago to the present day I have happily fed my habit in every way possible. If there’s any chance you recognize the symptoms in yourself come and join me for a comprehensive look at the many wonderful temptations which have sustained me over the past 30+ years. Together, strengthened by this joint counselling session, we can actively fight a cure!”

Learn from One of Quilting’s Brightest Stars at World Quilt New England

World Quilt New England, August 17-19, 2017, at Manchester’s Radisson Center of New Hampshire, features an impressive instructor line-up offering a variety of workshops and lectures. This year’s faculty includes well-known instructor RaNae Merrill.

RaNae is an award-winning quilter, author and teacher. Her unique “spiral” quilts have appeared in national shows and magazines, and her books Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts, Magnificent Spiral Mandala Quilts and Sideways Spiral Quilts have already become quilting classics. She is a popular instructor and teaches around the world.

RaNae found her calling as a professional quilter after previous careers as a pianist, a photographer and a travel writer. She holds both Bachelor and Master degrees in Piano Performance from University of Southern California and UCLA respectively.

She began quilting in 1989 when she found a batch of nine-patch squares in a trunk that had belonged to that grandmother. She started making baby quilts, incorporating Grandma’s blocks into each one. When people began praising her designs and suggesting that she quilt professionally, she brushed off the idea as impractical. Then, she attended a quilt festival where she was astonished to discover that being a professional quilter could, indeed, be a rewarding career!

Today RaNae designs quilts and patterns, writes quilting books and teaches workshops in the USA and abroad — in both English and Spanish. She still loves to travel!

RaNae is teaching three, full-day (9am – 4pm) workshops at World Quilt New England:

Thursday, August 17
Free Motion Mastery in a Month: A Block a Day to Machine Quilting Success
This class will help you build machine-quilting skills and confidence with simple daily exercises, even when you can’t be at a sewing machine. RaNae’s 25 years as a piano teacher inspired this simple, effective system.

Friday, August 18
Spiral Rose
Learn to foundation-piece this Spiral Rose. Along the way, you’ll learn to select fabrics by color and value, and pick up techniques for easier-than-ever foundation piecing.

Saturday, August 19
Magic Mirror Mandala Quilt
Use a simple spiral variation on the Log Cabin block to make a Magic Mirror Mandala Quilt — in one day you’ll go from mystery to mastery!

Register for one, two or all three of RaNae’s workshop at World Quilt – you won’t be disappointed. As RaNae commented, “One of my students wrote to me at the end of a project and said ‘I never thought I could do anything like this. You’ve changed my life.’ Moments like that are when I get the greatest joy from quilting.”

World Quilt New England Shines with International Instructor

Christine Porter:
Quilt Teacher, Lecturer, Author, Quilt Judge

The fifteenth annual World Quilt New England event, August 17-19, 2017, at Manchester’s Radisson Center of New Hampshire, offers a fantastic, panoramic view of the world’s take on quilting and the textile arts. The Festival’s World Quilt Competition, along with its special exhibits, provides a colorful vista of fabric and thread. In addition, the world-renowned faculty presenting workshops at the show can open the doors to a new world of quilting with their innovative designs and techniques.

ChrisPorter-AwardIncluded on the faculty for 2017 is Christine Porter. Taught to sew as a child by her grandmother and mother, it was not until 1989 that – on a sudden impulse – she visited the American Museum in Bath and discovered a wonderful collection of vintage American quilts. The quilts moved her so much that she gave up her career as a college lecturer in health studies to become a full-time quilter. (Pictured left, Christine with the Amy Emms Award for Services to British Quilting.)

Today, Christine is one of the foremost British quilters. Working in her Bristol studio, Chris creates wonderfully refreshing quilts that combine traditional shapes and clear colors with simple construction. The results are always fun, happy quilts. Chris’ quilts encourage the playful use of fabric.

The former editor of Britain’s Patchwork & Quilting magazine, Christine has authored six beautiful books including her most recent, Sensational Circle Quilts. On a lighter note, Chris combined her talents with Darra Williamson to create a new, light-hearted book, which is A Year in the Life of Sunbonnet Sue. Another book is currently in the making. She has also made four DVDs.

Because Christine is an excellent teacher, she is a very popular guest instructor, lecturer and quilt judge throughout Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Norway, Dubai, Kuwait, New Zealand, Spain, Turkey and France, and on cruises for Quilt Seminars at Sea. In 2010, Christine was given the Amy Emms Award for Services to British Quilting You may learn more about Christine at www.christineporterquilts.com.

FlyingAroundinCirclesChristine will present two full day workshops at the New England event. On Thursday, August 17, students can enjoy Flying Around in Circles while making an exciting quilting using circles and squares to produce a stunning design. Friday will be Strippy Fans with a Twist! – the twist is the special wedge ruler that takes math out of the equation. The half-day Rainbow Color Wheel Fan workshop on Saturday is Christine’s class for those new to making a fan quilt; learn the technique while making a pretty wall hanging or larger quilt. Click here for workshop details and images. (Pictured left,  Flying Around in Circles workshop sample.)

Christine will wrap up her stay in Manchester by hosting a luncheon/lecture on Saturday, August 19. She will transport you to Venice, Rome, Spain and beyond with her presenting Floor Tiles Make Fabulous Quilts – Be Inspired! Lunch is included with this presentation.
