America at 250: Dyes of Revolutionary Calicos
Half-Day Workshop
9 am - 12 pm, Thursday, September 17

For the United States' 250th birthday we will step back in time and look at fabrics and dyes used during this time period. Curious about the fabric in your antique quilt? What dyes were used? How it was printed? This class will provide answers to these questions and many more. Calicos and dyes were a large part of global trade especially prior to 1850 and the industrial revolution. We will explore the origins of fibers used to weave the fabric, the dyes used and where they originated, and methods used to print designs. During class we will dye cotton samples with commonly used dyes of this period (pre-1850). Students will take home a notebook of information along with samples of each dye from class.
