Ready to Take Your Quilting to the Next Level with Templates/Rulers?
Have you purchased a template/ruler for your home quilting machine, but aren’t quite sure what to do with it? Maybe you’ve watched YouTube videos and demonstrations but still aren’t sure where to begin. You’ll learn practical techniques for moving templates to create beautiful, creative designs. Discover the possibilities that templates/rulers can open up—even for those of us who “can’t freehand for the life of us!” No artistic talent or freehand experience is required! Come explore, experiment, and gain confidence using templates/rulers on your own machine.
Machine Requirements: Your machine must have the appropriate ruler foot. A ruler foot should be ½ inch wide from outside edge to outside edge and have tall or thick walls to guide the template safely.

Students to Provide
Supplies needed:
1) 8-12 fabric sandwiches approximately 12”- 16” square (please do not pin baste sandwiches nor use thick batting). Plain fabrics will show your stitching better than a busy print.
2) Contrasting 50 wt. thread to the fabric sandwiches. Please do not use a fine thread.
3) Marking tool for marking lines on fabric sandwiches.
4) 8-point stencil grid (I will have 4 that are to be shared in class) or rulers for marking guidelines
5) A large flat surface table that fits your free arm.
6) Small scissors for cutting thread
7) A slider to use on the machine table (super slider, Sew Slip, Glider). This item is HIGHLY recommended.
Templates Needed (please make sure you have the appropriate thickness template for your machine):
1) Straight line template/ruler (I will be demonstrating with our Mini Straight Line Tool)
2) A set of circles to be used on the inside. (I will be demonstrating with the Nested Mini Circles 1” – 4”)
3) Pointed Leaf/Oval tool
I will have our Starter Set, which contains all three tools, available for purchase in the classroom. Please contact me to let me know which thickness you require: patricia@quiltersrule.com
Supplies suggested but not necessary:
1) Quilting Gloves if you find them useful
2) Notebook or art book for drawing out designs and movement (colored pencils might be nice, but not necessary)
Machine requirements: Each machine MUST have a ruler foot appropriate for that machine. A ruler foot is ½ inch wide from outside edge to outside edge. It must have a thick or tall wall. The following manufacturers make a ruler foot specifically for their machines: BERNINA (#72 foot or #72S), Baby Lock, Juki, Janome, Elna, Viking/Husqvarna, Pfaff. All other machines will need to buy a “generic” foot. The two best options are the Westalee Ruler foot distributed by Sew Steady and the Clarity foot put out by Accents on Design. Nancy’s Notions, Missouri Star Quilts, and most independent Quilt shops that sell machines have access to one of these options.
Each machine should have a table or large surface to support fabric sandwiches and templates.
Your machine must be in good working order, be able to drop its feed dogs, and be able to operate with the needle stopping in the needle-down position. Please make sure your fabric can still move when the ruler foot is in the down position.
