Rulers + Free Motion: Building a Custom Quilting Toolbox
Half-Day Workshop
1 pm - 4 pm, Thursday, March 4
Take your custom quilting beyond a single technique by learning how rulers and free-motion quilting can work together to create polished, intentional designs.
In this class, we’ll explore how to combine structure with creativity: using rulers for clean lines, curves, and framework, then adding free-motion elements to bring texture, movement, and personality into the quilting. You’ll learn how to choose which technique works best in different areas of a quilt, how to transition smoothly between ruler work and free motion, and how to build designs that look complex without becoming unnecessarily complicated.
The goal is not to memorize one finished layout, but to build a versatile quilting toolbox you can use again and again. You’ll leave with practical design strategies, new combinations to experiment with, and greater confidence in creating custom quilting that fits the quilt in front of you.
All Levels
Required class kit, $55 payable to the instructor in class, includes printouts, fabric for top and back, straight ruler, shaped ruler (curve, wave, or other), fabric for top (preprinted block, border, corner), fabric for back, batting, and a marker. Also available for optional purchase in class: various quilting rulers, $10-$100.
Students to Provide

-Small scissors for thread
