Custom Quilting: From Planning to the Last Stitch
Full-Day Workshop
9 am - 4 pm, Friday, March 5
Great custom quilting starts long before the first stitch. In this class, we’ll walk through the entire custom quilting process - from studying the quilt top and developing a plan to choosing designs, balancing density, managing transitions, and bringing the whole piece together into a cohesive finished quilt.
We’ll discuss how to decide what should stand out, what should recede, where to add detail, and where simplicity will make the quilting stronger. You’ll learn practical strategies for dividing a quilt into workable sections, selecting designs that complement the piecing, and maintaining visual balance across borders, blocks, backgrounds, and focal areas.
Just as importantly, we’ll talk about how to keep the quilting process efficient and realistic so an ambitious custom plan doesn’t become overwhelming halfway through the quilt.
All Levels
Required class kit, $55 payable to the instructor in class, includes 2 preprinted quilt tops, backing fabric, batting, 2 quilting rulers, a marker, and printouts. Also available for optional purchase in class: various quilting rulers, $10-$100.
Students to Provide
-Notebook and pencil
-Small scissors for clipping threads
