Tips and tricks for creating geometric shapes with freeform piecing: triangles, quadrilaterals, and hexagons. Explore the design possibilities of repeating motifs and learn how to join irregular shaped blocks. *All images are indicative only and represent what can be achieved using the techniques learned.
All Levels
Students to Provide
General:
• Sewing machine with 1/4 inch foot (or equivalent needle setting)
• Rotary cutter with a SHARP blade and cutting mat
• Quilters ruler
• Chalk pencil (Brenda likes Clover Chaco liners)
• Neutral-coloured thread for piecing
• Spray starch (optional)
• Extension cord & power board
• Notebook, digital camera or cameraphone
• Name tag
• Batting, flannel sheet or similar to use as a design wall. (if venue allows)
Fabrics:
This workshop is most suitable for fabrics that read as a single colour such as solids, hand-dyes, batiks, tone on tone prints and small- scale prints.
Warm Up Exercises & Samples:
• Four 6 1⁄2 in squares. Two dark and two light.
• Two, 6 1⁄2 x 4in rectangles. One dark and one light.
• Four 4 1⁄2 in squares. Two dark and two light.
• Two 12x4in rectangles: one dark and one light.
• One 10x3in rectangle with a 25-40in long 1⁄2 in wide strip in contrasting colour
• One 10x2 in strip with a 40in long 1in wide strip in a contrasting colour
For your own compositions:
• Assorted fabric scraps in both light and dark colours.
