Fabric Collage Techniques: Koos van den Akker Style!
Full-Day Workshop
12 pm - 6 pm EST, Friday, April 30

The late Dutch fashion designer Koos van den Akker had a unique approach to fabric surface design for wearables by using applique, bias tape, layering, collage lace, slashing, and “origami” techniques to create new fabrics for his designs. This workshop will give students an opportunity to explore some of Koos’ techniques and create a small wallhanging-size sample, or a piece of collaged cloth that can be expanded to making a whole garment.
All Levels (but must know how to use a sewing machine)

Students to Provide

-One yard of fabric (which can be any kind of fabric, not just quilting cotton) to serve as the base of the collage

-At least 2 half-yard pieces of other fabrics that coordinate or contrast nicely with the base

-Several yards of single fold bias tape OR a Clover 1/2“ bias tape maker and a half yard of fabric to make tape. Making your own bias tape will be demonstrated in class.

-A yard or two of yarn (novelty yarns or ribbons are great for this).

-Spool of invisible thread (normal size like sewing thread—not a giant cone)

-Small package of water soluble medium such as Sulky Solvy

-Several small pieces of accent fabrics—for appliques.

- Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat

- Tailor’s chalk or chalk pencil

- Glue stick

- Sharp scissors, big and small

- Basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, thread, measuring, tape)

- Optional but fun: flexible curve tool.
