Beth Cunningham
Fredericksburg, TX

Beth Cunningham is a fiber artist whose work is rooted in meticulous handwork, material exploration, and personal narrative. Working primarily with embroidery, she creates richly layered 2-D and 3-D works that frequently incorporate the recurring silhouette of the dress. This form serves as both subject and metaphor - suggesting identity, memory, camouflage, and the unseen interior of the wearer. Cunningham's artistic path was set early. Inspired by her mother, a skilled seamstress, she began making art at the age of 5, using colorful spools of thread and fabric scraps from the sewing room floor. She later earned a degree in Clothing and Textiles, a master's in Studio Art, and spent 42 years teaching. The teaching career continues to inform her research-driven studio practices, her curiosity about materials, and her commitment to reuse and reinvent. Her studio work is slow and intentional. Cunningham stitches entirely by hand on painted and stained, layered cloth and paper, embracing repetition as a timeless, meditative act. Recent research explores traditional Japanese papermaking techniques, including the use of konnyaku paste and the momigami process, as she investigates the boundaries between paper and cloth, and experiments with constructing embroidered, hand-sewn garments from paper. Cunningham works in series, drawing inspiration from memory, place, and imagination. Her work reflects a lifelong fascination with process, material, and storytelling - quietly complex, deeply personal, and unmistakably hand-created.
