Einstein Tiles & English Paper Piecing
3-Hour Workshop
10 am - 1 pm EST, Saturday, January 23
Discover what happens when an extraordinary geometric discovery meets the slow, creative process of English Paper Piecing. In this workshop, students will explore the Einstein “hat” monotile—a fascinating 13-sided shape that can cover a surface without creating a repeating pattern—and translate it into an approachable EPP project built from kite-shaped units.
Students will learn how to baste and join the kite units while exploring how fabric placement, color, value, and repetition can dramatically change the appearance of the finished design. We’ll also experiment with fussy cutting and secondary patterns, discovering how the same set of shapes can produce completely different visual effects.
Designed to make an unusual shape feel approachable, this workshop combines traditional English Paper Piecing techniques with contemporary design exploration. Students will leave with a growing Einstein tile composition, greater confidence working with nontraditional EPP shapes, and plenty of ideas for making the design uniquely their own.
