Translating the Beauty of Roses Into Fabric
6-Hour Workshop
10 am - 4 pm EST, Saturday, January 23

Part lecture, part hands-on workshop - come spend the day celebrating all things ROSES! We’ll be making colorful improv roses - practicing improv piecing techniques, talking about approaches to color placement for creating depth and dimension, and adding secondary elements (improv leaves and filler blocks). We’ll also jump into the history books to learn how my hometown of Portland, Oregon, earned the nickname “City of Roses,” and as a new addition to my workshop, we’ll take a historical look at rose quilts across generations, following trends in their popularity. If you share my love of roses, this is the workshop for you!
All Levels

The workshop fee includes the $12 class pattern. Students will receive a PDF of the class pattern by email. Please print before class. Please note: Digital patterns can be emailed worldwide.

An OPTIONAL Improv Rose Fabric Pack is available from huntingtonquiltdesign.com.

Students to Provide
BASIC SEWING SUPPLIES NEEDED: Sewing machine with 1/4” foot, thread (neutral color), fabric scissors, cutting mat/rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, pins, seam ripper, pencil, iron/ironing board

FABRIC NEEDED: Muslin or other lightweight, light-colored fabric in the following 3 sizes: four - 6 ½” x 6 ½”; four - 6 ½” x 2 ½”; four - 3 ½” x 3 ½”. Wide variety of scraps for rose petals (largest size needed approx. 2” x 6”). A wide variety of scraps in light/medium/dark greens for the background.

TIPS ON FABRIC SELECTION: Choose tone-on-tone fabrics in a wide range of color values (for example, to make pink roses, select fabrics in very pale pink + medium pink + deep pink + fuchsia, etc.). Batiks, painterly fabrics, prints, solids - anything goes. Variety adds interest! Teeny-tiny scraps welcomed! IMPROV ROSES PATTERN (required): You will receive a digital pattern from QuiltFest before class. We will be making 6” roses in our workshop; the pattern includes guidelines for making a variety of sizes.

IMPROV ROSE FABRIC PACKS (optional): For ease and convenience, IMPROV ROSE FABRIC PACKS can be purchased for class. Each fabric pack makes two 6” finished roses of the same color (Six colors available: butterscotch, pink, purple, red, watermelon, yellow). View color choices and place orders directly from my website: huntingtonquiltdesign.com. Please allow ample time for shipping. (U.S. only)

BEFORE CLASS: No homework is required before class, other than gathering your supplies! (If you want to find photos or magazine clippings of roses for reference, that’s an option.)
