Soleil - Elements of Improv
6-hour Workshop
10 am - 4 pm EST, Friday, January 22
Are you interested in improv quilting, but the getting-started’s got you stuck, or choosing a color palette has you perplexed? Whether you’re a beginner or a boss, come spend the day immersed in IMPROV! Using my newly awarded quilt SOLEIL as a reference, we’ll talk about color and how to create a cohesive, balanced composition. We’ll deconstruct SOLEIL, looking at various design elements used throughout, including strips, triangles, and rhombuses, plus signs, sticks-n-stones, and improv sunburst blocks using foundation paper piecing. You’ll leave with plenty of ideas to get you going on your improv masterpiece!

Students to Provide
BASIC SEWING SUPPLIES NEEDED: Sewing machine with 1/4” foot, thread (neutral color), paper scissors, fabric scissors, cutting mat/rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, regular ruler (or a piece of heavy cardstock paper), pins, seam ripper, iron/ironing board, pencil w/eraser for pattern designing, pen for note-taking
FABRIC NEEDED: Fat quarters and/or scraps of fabric in colors of your choice. We’ll likely make 5 or 6 blocks in all, depending on time/work flow. Also, bring muslin or other light-colored fabric to use as a foundation for some of the blocks (1/4 yard will be more than enough).
HANDOUT WILL BE PROVIDED: You will receive a free workshop handout from QuiltFest before class that can be used for note-taking. The handout will include a template for the sunburst block.
BEFORE CLASS: Please copy the sunburst template onto lightweight paper, such as newsprint - we will be using this to create an improv FPP block (only 1 copy needed for class) + gather your supplies!
