Improv Stripes
3-Hour Workshop
12 pm - 3 pm EST, Friday, January 22
Explore how stripes function in quilt design — from pattern repeats to improv compositions.
Working exclusively with solid fabrics, students will construct striped designs using an improv approach. We will begin by considering color and building a color palette, constructing stripe-based units without rulers, and exploring design ideas for creating a larger composition into a quilt top.
Topics covered include:
• Creating an effective color palette considering hue, value, and saturation
• Exploring repeated striped patterning
• Constructing ruler-free stripe sets and combining units
• Evaluating and refining composition
Students will learn to create ruler-free, improv-style striped units and use a flexible design process to combine, evaluate, and refine them into cohesive quilt compositions. Discover how easy and addictive stripes can be—and how much visual energy they can bring to an improv composition.

• Rotary cutter with a new, sharp blade
• Cutting mat
• Sewing machine and basic sewing supplies (neutral colored thread, scissors, seam ripper, rulers)
• Iron/ironing board
• Portable design wall
• Solid fabrics – see note for fabric requirements
Note: There are no specific yardage requirements as this is an improvisational process, but have on hand solid fabric in at least six different colors and at least one neutral—each color in quarter- or half-yard increments. Fat quarters work fine here.
• 3-4 colors in light to medium value
• 3-4 colors in medium to dark values
• Include both “brights” and muted colors
• 1 Neutral: can be black, white, grey, brown, and either in a light or dark value
• Additional fabrics outside the plan to allow for adjustments during the workshop
