Mini Reverse Appliqué Hearts
3-Hour Workshop
4 pm - 7 pm EST, Thursday, January 21
These mini hearts are a perfect small project to learn the reverse appliqué technique. The shape of these mini hearts starts with a set of my cookie cutters and can be a sweet addition to your last-minute Valentine project. You will learn the needleturn appliqué stitch as well as a straight stitch to complete the heart. The finished 6” mini heart block can stand on its own as a mug rug, pincushion, pillow, or small wall hanging, or it can be added to another project of your choice. Suitable for all levels of quilters, and all sewing is done by hand.
All Levels
The workshop fee includes the $10 class pattern/worksheet. Students will receive a PDF of the class pattern by email. Please print before class. Please note: Digital patterns can be emailed worldwide.
Students to Provide
Since this is a small project, this is a good time to look into your stash of 100% cotton fabric for a background, as well as the hearts.
Before Class:
Cut an 8 ½” square of 100% cotton fabric for your background
Fabric: Background fabric should be a light color.
6 ½” fabric square for large heart
4 ” fabric square for small heart
Thread: 100% cotton 50 wt. thread to match your appliqués, as well as your background fabric. If you cannot find the color in cotton, you can also use polyester-covered cotton. Aurifil has a 100% cotton 80 wt. thread that works well also. If you use a straight stitch as shown in the photo, use 3 strands of embroidery floss.
Needles: A long, slim needle works best for needleturn. Size 10 to 12 Sharps or Milliner needles work well. If you have a favorite appliqué needle, you can use that needle. Use an embroidery needle for the embroidery floss if you wish.
Other Supplies: Freezer Paper, fabric marker/pencil for tracing pattern and marking fabric, ½” or ¾” appliqué pins, small paper scissors, embroidery scissors for fabric, iron and ironing board standing by, thimble if you use one, light box (optional), and any other sewing supplies that make you happy.
