Paint & Stitch — Kantha-Inspired Stitched Patchwork
Full Day Workshop
Saturday, October 19, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Kantha stitching using a big running hand stitch is everywhere, but maybe you don’t have the right fabrics to use or aren’t sure how to start. Don’t worry—in the morning, you’ll paint an assortment of fabrics to create your own solids, prints and patterned fabrics using simple techniques that anyone can do. In the afternoon, create a small quilt (about 18” x 18”) that you can hang on the wall, frame, or make into a pillow or tote bag. No experience needed—painting and stitching techniques are so easy that anyone can do them. All levels.

Materials List: Kit fee $10, payable to instructor, includes shared paints, stencils, stamps and other art supplies. Bring to Class: Fabrics and Sewing Supplies: 1½ yards total of white and light-colored print fabrics—bleached muslin, Kona cotton or other plain white fabric (light-colored and white-on-white prints are all good to bring). Pieces can be as small as 4” x 4”, but bring some larger pieces as well, or just bring yardage—pre-wash all fabric if possible. 18” x 18” piece of batting. A few colors of perle cotton thread or embroidery floss. Sharp needle with eye large enough for the perle cotton or floss. Fabric scissors. Straight pins. Glue stick. Painting Supplies: Two 1” foam brushes. 2 plastic spoons. 2 plastic plates to use as palettes. Latex-type gloves. Several plastic cups or other containers for water. Small package of wet wipes for cleaning up. Wear old clothes and/or bring an apron. Optional: Thimble. Available for purchase in class: $5 for additional kit of supplemental fabrics to paint.
