Illustrative Free Motion
Full Day Workshop

Friday, October 18, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Moving beyond the basics of fill shapes and outlines with machine quilting sometimes takes a lot of courage and a little bit of finesse. In this workshop, you will learn to free motion quilt representational subject matter in ways that really make your designs pop! You will create an 18” square wholecloth piece in class using one of two designs provided. Here are a few of the topics that will be covered: a recap of basic machine quilting skills; tips, tools and materials I recommend; how design, scale and color affect your final project; how to mark and follow a quilting pattern using one of my designs or one of your own; how working on a solid piece of fabric will improve your quilting skills; my simple bias binding technique. My goal is to help you build your confidence, boost your skill level and increase your overall knowledge of free motion machine quilting. You will have a choice of working with my Bee or Sunflower design. If you have a basic grasp of machine quilting skills, and a little experience, that is all that is required. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels. Confident Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced levels.

Materials List: Bring to Class: A sewing machine. Darning or Machine Quilting foot is an absolute necessity. Make sure your sewing machine is in good working order; please bring the manual. You must be able to lower the feed dogs on your machine for free-motion quilting. Bring a small machine extension table if you have one. Fabric: For practice and thread testing, two 10” quilt sandwiches: backing, batting and white or natural muslin top fabric. For project, be sure to prewash your fabrics! Top Layer: One 18½” square of good quality white cotton fabric (sateen works great). Backing: One 22” square of muslin or other white fabric. Batting: One 22” square of wool is best, or Hobbs Heirloom batting works (80% cotton and 20% polyester). Thread: You will select one of the two patterns for the class project. You can bring thread you have on hand in similar colors to the ones listed. The thread I use and recommend for wholecloth or decorative work is Aurifil Cotton Mako, 28 weight in the following colors: Cream #2310, Dark Gold #2140, Orange #2150, Rust #2355, Olive Green #910, Medium Gray #2605.
