Seams Out Quilted Pillow
Full-Day Workshop
9 am - 4 pm, Friday, February 28

Add surface texture and design to a modern quilted pillow by including the quarter-inch seams on the outside.

Make a modern and tactile quilted pillow

We usually hide our quarter-inch seam allowances on the back of our quilts, but that’s a missed opportunity for design and texture. In the Seams-Out Quilted Pillow workshop, we’ll make those seams an integral part of the design, adding an artistic touch.

We will make two strip sets, slice and splice them together, and then use the quilt-as-you-go technique and a walking foot to quickly create sumptuous, quilted fabric. Next, we’ll turn that fabric into the front and back of a fabulous, quilted pillow. You’ll also learn to put in an invisible zipper!

Participants will receive guidance for choosing fabric colors, textures and printed designs that allow the seams-out texture to really shine. Once you have the technique down, you can apply the seams-out idea to all kinds of quilted projects.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

  • Choosing complimentary fabrics for an attractive result
  • Sewing strip sets with seams on the front
  • Quilt-as-you-go method, using your domestic machine and a walking foot
  • How to sew an invisible zipper
  • Precision sewing tips for a professional finish

A complete PDF supply list will be provided. Class sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one time.

This is an all-levels class. You should be comfortable using your sewing machine and walking foot (or dual feed), and both should be in good working order. Basic knowledge of walking foot quilting is helpful, but not necessary. We will learn together!

Students to Provide

o   Printed fabric shows this technique best! Select printed fabrics that appear tone-on-tone: low-contrast designs with smaller prints or printed textures are perfect. You can have one highlight fabric that has a more prominent design. Quilting cotton is easiest to work with. (Batiks and flat solids do not show off the texture, avoid them.)

o   Iron your fabric: please pre-press and stack your fat quarters. Fat quarters measure about 18" x 21" or 18" x 22".
After pressing, roll them around a paper towel core or pool noodle to keep them nice and flat for the workshop.

  • Batting: standard cotton quilt batting (or 80/20 cotton/poly), two 21" x 21" pieces.
  • Backing/Lining: bring two 22" x 22" pieces of cotton fabric. Any fabric that goes with your fat quarters is fine.
  • Zipper: 18" (or longer) invisible plastic zipper in a color that is slightly darker than your fabric selection.
  • Quilting thread: in 3 colors that harmonize with your fabric selection. I like 40 or 50 weight Aurifil Cotton thread for the wide range of colors available, and Sulky Rayon which gives the threads a bit of shine.
  • 20" pillow form: you do not need to bring this with you to in-person workshops, you can put it in at home.
  • OPTIONAL:  1.25 yards of fabric for backing if you’d like to make an envelope style pillow back instead of using a zipper. A good choice is to use one of the darker value fabrics that you’re using on the front of the quilted pillow.
