Intro to Sashiko (Japanese Hand Quilting) and Make a Furoshiki (Traditional Wrapping Cloth), Full Day Workshop

Saturday, February 24, 9 am - 4 pm

In the morning, we’ll work by hand and learn to do Sashiko (traditional Japanese quilting. In the afternoon, we’ll follow directions to piece the top of a furoshiki (wrapping cloth) and use our newly-made sashiko block as part of the project. Work in the afternoon is by machine. All levels.

Materials List: Kit for Sashiko (morning work) includes lots of how-to directions, ½ yard indigo fabric, perle cotton thread, pack of sashiko needles, needle threader, two thimble alternatives, chalk pencil and sashiko stencil. Cost is $25 per student payable to instructor.
Bring a squishy pillow, a pair of white cuffed socks you’re willing to cut up, small scissors, notebook/pen for notes, camera. For afternoon machine furoshiki construction, students need the following: Sewing machine ready to stitch, rotary cutter/mat, two rulers - one long one like 6” x 18”-22” long ruler and another that’s a square. Fabrics: (please wash, dry, iron prior to class): 1 yard large-scale Asian-style print, ½ yard medium shade solid color to coordinate, ¼ yard (cut 9” x 44”) of dark solid your choice. Backing: 1 yard homespun check or plaid. Sewing machine required.
