Creating New Cloth from Old Lace
Half-Day Workshop
12 pm - 3 pm EDT, Saturday, June 12

Do you love old lace doilies and trimmings, or have you inherited your great grandmother’s stash of crocheted, tatted, or knitted lace? Don't know what to do with them? This workshop is for you!

Judy's 70,000 Hours of Legacy Lace jacket [pictured] won first prize at PIQF in 2019. In this workshop, you will learn how to take ‘bits and bobs’ of old lace and turn them into yardage that can be used to sew art wearables, whether it is a whole-lace jacket or just an embellishment, sleeve, or cuff.

Students will create a small piece of “lace cloth” using doilies, trims, and bits of old lace edgings, essentially a collage of lace that, once machine-sewn, will stand on its own as a sturdy fabric. You will learn how to choose a garment pattern that is suitable for lace fabric, and how to begin your lace work of art. You will also learn how to overdye your finished cloth to help the varied colors of lace bits look like a cohesive whole. So head to your attic, local thrift, antique store, or flea market and gather your doilies while ye may!
All Levels

Students to Provide

  1. PELLON Stick-N-Washaway Stabilizer [a yard of 19” wide OR a 5-pack of the 8 1/2” sheets-- The yardage version of this product gives you more flexibility if you plan to use this technique for garment sewing, OR a package of SULKY Sticky Fabri-Solvy.
  2. A package of regular SULKY Fabri-Solvy Soluble Stabilizer OR other non-sticky transparent water-soluble stabilizer.
  3. Lots of lace doilies, trims, edgings—enough to cover our sample surface of about 17” x 11”.
  4. Sewing machine in good working order, no fancy stitches needed.
  5. Sewing thread in a color that blends with the doilies you wish to use and preferably with some cotton content if you plan to overdye your piece.
  6. Recommended: Schmetz Super Nonstick Needles (“Teflon needles”) or a Microtex sewing machine needle
