Susan E Pelland
Upton, Massachusetts

Sue Pelland has been quilting and teaching since the age of 13. Sue worked for her family owned quilt shop while earning a degree in Textile Chemistry. Her love of traditional appliqué quilts, combined with her limited quilting time as a busy mom, inspired Sue to invent tools designed to make appliqué faster and more successful for quilters of all skill levels. Sue is the designer of “Leaves Galore™” rotary cutting templates for appliqué as well as numerous patterns.

Hearts and More Applique Techniques, Half Day
Friday, 9/19/2014 - 9/19/2014, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Who needs another unfinished project? This class is for learning techniques only. You will not go home with a project that you have to finish. Make samples of some of the shapes you can make with “Hearts and More” templates including flowers, hearts, chains and circles. Put these samples in a binder for future reference or make them into a small wall quilt as pictured in the class sample. See how Sue’s quick rotary cut appliqué techniques can enhance your quilts. This class featured fused appliqué, but the shapes and cutting techniques translate equally well to future hand appliqué projects. No sewing is done in class, just cutting, fusing and creating. All levels. Materials List: *28 mm rotary cutter with brand new blade. Rotating cutting mat or standard cutting mat. *Set of Hearts and More templates (Small, Large or both). 12” x 18” rectangle of at least 4 appliqué fabrics; 3 fabric colors for hearts and flowers, 1 green fabric for vines and leaves. One 12” square of an appliqué fabric that resembles your background fabric with a slight contrast. For example, if you use a black background, bring a dark gray 12” square. If you use a white background, bring a very light pastel 12” square. Pre-fuse all your appliqué fabrics with fusible of your choice. Please do not use Steam a Seam II because of the tacky side. (I prefer *Mistyfuse). Come with all the appliqué fabrics pre-fused to make the most of class time. (Watch my online video to learn how at Suepellanddesigns.com). 3/4 yard of background fabric with good contrast to the 4 appliqué fabrics. Dark or light background works well. Precut this yardage into one 15 1/2” square and two 5 1/2” x WOF strips. Iron and ironing surface. *Grace TrueGrips for the back of your templates. Standard class supplies: pencil, notebook, scissors, camera. Email sue@suepellanddesigns if you wish to purchase a class kit, $51.95. Class kit includes small Hearts and More set, Grace TrueGrips, four 12” x 18” fabric rectangles (in pinks) fused with Mistyfuse, precut background fabric, precut and pre-fused leaves and stems. If you have a Norme or Petite Leaves Galore template, you can bring it to class to cut leaves or use my precut leaves. You must have at least one Hearts and More template set for this class. *Available for purchase in class.
