Judi Gunter is a NQA certified quilt judge, teacher, lecturer and award-winning quilter. Her work has been published in major quilt magazines and has appeared in many shows. She enjoys combining quilts, humor and historical events in her lectures and workshops. Judi is also an avid antique doll quilt collector and incorporates their designs in her traditional quilts. Dolly Madison's Star: A Tribute to the First Ladies, Full Day

Hello Dolly! Join Judi for a tribute to the First Ladies! This is one in a series of quilts dedicated to the First Ladies of our country. Dolly was considered one of the heroines of the War of 1812. Using a star block that was named for Dolly, create this quilt with quick triangular piecing, multiple setting options. Plus, learn how to calculate the corner and side setting blocks. Hear all about the First Lady, her life, the unusual flavor of her favorite ice cream, and receive a special surprise to commemorate the occasion. All levels. Materials List: Fabric requirements: 3/4 yard background fabric; 3/4 yard fabric for the star; 1 yard fabric for the inner block square and setting blocks, 1/2 yard fabric for the alternate blocks and inner border; 2/3 yard fabric for the outer border; 1 yard Heat N Bond fusible web. Basic sewing supplies including sewing machine, rotary cutter, mat and ruler, scissors, seam ripper, pins, thread. Sewing machine required.

Hand Applique: Day Lily, Full Day

Dislike those annoying pins and starting/stopping when you do needle turn appliqué? Whether or not you are new or experienced at appliqué, this is a great way to practice those appliqué skills or learn some new ones! Learn how to make freezer paper templates, create pinless fabric appliqué pieces, use a hera marker, bias tape maker, and pattern overlay to appliqué an art nouveau style design. Use the finished 14” x 14” project as a quilt center, small quilt or complete it for a pillow. All levels. Materials List: Fabric requirements: fat quarter for the background; assorted greens for the stems and leaves; assorted colors for the flowers; 1/8 yard or 9” x 12” scrap for the contrasting “swish;” 1/8 yard (not a fat) for the 1/4” bias border; 16” x 16” square of light weight interfacing (not iron on). Basic sewing supplies including rotary cutter, mat and ruler; paper and fabric scissors; pins and 2 safety pins; thread to match the fabrics; hand sewing needle; 12” x 12” piece of freezer paper; glue stick; pencil and a Sharpie pen; Hera marker; 1/4” bias tape maker (Clover brand). Optional: we are going to be hand sewing, so a light might be helpful.

Panel Play, Full Day

Love the look of the preprinted fabric panels but don’t know what to do with them? Explore six different ways to make your panel unique. Shifting and adding additional fabric strips will turn your panel into a one of a kind piece. Discussions and demonstrations will center on panel selection, various construction choices, and border options. You can bring one or more panels (any size will do) to class and try out different techniques. It’s fascinating, fun, and fast! All levels. Materials List: Preprinted panel(s), any size. 3/4 yard contrasting fabric for inserts. 1/2 yard fabric for the border. 1/4 yard fabric for the inner border. Basic sewing supplies: Sewing machine. Rotary cutter, mat and ruler. Scissors, seam ripper. Pins. Thread. Optional: a fabric kit that includes a large panel, border fabrics and a contrasting fabric will be available to purchase in class for $20 (the panels used for the class samples are no longer available, but others will be offered). Sewing machine required.
